Bōgu Kumite is a phrase meaning “sparring match using protective armor.” Bōgu Kumite is a mid-traditional sparring competition using full-contact punches, kicks, and blocks. Modified kendo armor is worn as protective equipment and is widely used in various Martial Arts that fight without weapons, such as our classical Ryukyu Kempo Karate system. Generally, only strikes that would hinder an opponent had they not been wearing the protective equipment are scored.

Bōgu Kumite was introduced to Okinawa in the 1950s and was used in most of Okinawa’s open karate tournaments during the 1960s and mid-1970s. It is in response to Japan’s ban on full-contact, bare-knuckle fighting between karate opponents. Concern arose that if there were no threats within sparring, combat-proven techniques would be replaced with ineffective practices. Thus, Sparring Bōgu gear was implemented in dojos to help safely continue practicing combat-proven techniques from the past.

Bōgu Kumite still exists today as a freestyle discipline in many life protection arts. But most importantly, Bōgu Kumite develops a heightened fighting spirit helping students gain confidence in themselves.
