Bōgu Kumite is a phrase meaning “sparring match using protective armor.” Bōgu Kumite is a mid-traditional sparring competition using full-contact punches, kicks, and blocks. Modified kendo armor is worn as protective equipment and is widely used in various Martial Arts that fight without weapons, such as our classical Ryukyu Kempo Karate system. Generally, only strikes that would hinder an opponent had they not been wearing the protective equipment are scored.
Our dō is a traditionally inspired chest protector used to protect the front torso and rib areas. It consists of a gently-curving stomach and chest protector and an attached tare which consists of three thick cloth-covered flaps hanging beneath the dō on the front half of the belt region to protect the upper legs and groin. The dō is supported from the shoulders by two diagonal ties secured in the back. The bulge on the dō helps direct the force of strikes away from the soft areas in the middle of the torso, while the attached tare is not a target area but used for protection against accidental strikes.
